What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

On the day of your rhinoplasty, you will first meet with Dr. Familusi to ensure your comfort with the procedure and review the surgical plan. Then, you will meet the Anesthesiologist, who will administer your sedation for a more comfortable experience.

Open Rhinoplasty

This surgical approach involves Dr. Familusi making a small external incision across the columella of the nose (the bridge of skin separating the nostrils). This incision then extends to additional incisions hidden inside the nose, allowing the surgeon to delicately lift the nasal skin, nasal muscles, and soft tissue from the underlying structures. She can then access the underlying structures of the nasal bridge and nasal tip, which allows her to reshape the nasal cartilages and paired nasal bones as desired.

This approach also allows for more direct and precise corrections. After the surgery, the incision is closed with stitches. The external scar is small and barely noticeable once it heals.

Closed Rhinoplasty

The surgical approach does not use an external incision but rather incisions on the inside of the nostrils. While it is a more limited approach, Dr. Familusi can separate the soft tissues in your nose from the underlying structures and then reshape the nasal tissue through the internal opening.

The advantage of this approach is that there is less visible scarring, however, it is best suited for less dramatic structural changes because it does not provide broad access to all the nasal structures .
