Introduction to Chemical Peels

A chemical peel offers impressive resurfacing results for patients seeking a renewed level of vitality in their complexion. The treatment exfoliates the outermost layer of damaged cells to reveal clearer, more radiant skin. Dr. Olatomide (Tomi) Familusi at Élevé Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is an experienced skincare expert and Fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who focuses on preserving each patient’s natural, timeless beauty while eliminating aesthetic flaws that interfere with self-confidence and peace of mind.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are formulated with a customized solution that chemically exfoliates the outer layer of damaged skin cells. Peels are categorized as light, medium, or deep, allowing for a high degree of customization when it comes to targeting each patient’s unique skincare concerns. Acids in a chemical peel raise the skin’s pH level in order to dislodge dead skin cells, dirt, debris, bacteria, and oil, leaving behind a healthier, blemish-free complexion.

Dr. Familusi will conduct a private consultation in Atlanta, GA, to determine the best approach for accomplishing your goals. In general, she performs the following types of chemical peels:

Light peels—Light peels rely on alpha-hydroxy acid to gently remove the outermost layer of compromised skin. They can be undergone every six weeks and require the least amount of recovery time.

Medium peels – Medium peels are made with trichloroacetic or glycolic acid. They produce more dramatic results than light peels but also come with more downtime. Patients can undergo a medium peel every 4-6 months.

Deep peels—A patient will require a deep peel only once every 3-5 years, and some will only need to undergo one in their lifetime. The peel utilizes phenol or trichloroacetic acid to achieve powerful rejuvenation results that transform the skin’s tone and texture.

What Are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a staple at most medspas and plastic surgery practices, thanks to their ability to eradicate a wide array of cosmetic imperfections and impurities. Benefits include:

  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Corrects wrinkles, lines, and creases

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are suitable for most healthy patients who are unhappy with their skin’s tone and texture and wish to revive their complexion. What’s the first step?

She will listen to your concerns, answer your questions in depth, and curate the ideal treatment plan for correcting your skincare issues. • Avoid using retinol and other exfoliants for 48 hours before your session

  • Avoid direct sun and wear an SPF of 30 or higher
  • Don’t shave or wax for at least 24 hours before your chemical peel

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel Treatment

During treatment, a chemical solution – formulated according to the patient’s unique treatment plan – is applied to the skin using a specialized sponge. The solution will remain in place for a specific amount of time that Dr. Familusi deems therapeutic. Once the time is up, the chemical solution is washed off and a cold compress is applied to the patient’s face to cool the skin.

Chemical Peel Recovery

After your chemical peel, Dr. Familusi will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions specific to your treatment. Recovery time varies based on the intensity of your chemical peel. Light peels come with less downtime (typically 5-7 days), while deep peels may require 2-3 weeks of healing. As the skin recuperates, you may experience dryness, irritation, and peeling, which are all normal side effects of the procedure. For this reason, it is important that you schedule your chemical peel around one month prior to any important events or occasions. After a chemical peel, your skin will be especially vulnerable to harmful UV rays from the sun. It is critical that you wear sunblock every time you go outside. You should also avoid sun exposure from 10 am to 4 pm every day.
